Passing For Human

For a long time I have been fascinated with the behaviour of Amanda Knox who is currently on trial (along with her former lover Raffaele Sollecito) for her part in the murder and sexual assault of Meredith Kercher. Following the discovery of Meredith’s body, during the subsequent investigation, arrest and in the ongoing trial, Amanda’s behaviour has been perceived at best as kooky and at worst, bordering on psychopathic.
There are many people who believe Amanda’s personality is irrelevant and as such, any attempt so far to draw conclusions from her behaviour have been met with equal parts of criticism and aggressive scorn. But there are also a great number of people who believe that understanding Amanda may be the key to unlocking the secrets of what happened to poor Meredith that night and more importantly why.
I’d like to assure you that whilst writing this particular post, my individual preconceptions about her guilt or innocence have been entirely cast aside in order that I may investigate the curious facets of her unique personality and the insights this may give us, objectively and without bias. In any case, my opinions will in no way influence the trial or court proceedings, likewise I do not feel that anything I have to say on this matter will further tarnish the reputation of Amanda Knox who (with a little help from her media friends) has already succeeded admirably in this respect.
It is certainly true that there are light and dark sides to Amanda Knox’s personality as this is the case for every human being on earth, despite this I have become increasingly troubled by her apparent lack of empathy, concern, fear or emotion throughout the trial, this, coupled with her flamboyant gestures of apathy and (at times) arrogance, lead me to feel it is important to explore her character in more depth. Some people might at this stage be wondering how on earth I could presume to analyse the character of a young woman I have never interviewed in a clinical setting or even met, but we must consider the wealth of information about Amanda which is currently in the public domain. This information has not been provided entirely by the media but by the Friends of Amanda (FOA) PR campaign and, through letters, emails, diaries, testimony and observed behaviour in the courtroom, Amanda Knox herself.
The following conclusions are my own and are in no way a clinical diagnosis of a personality disorder. They are also the sum of their individual parts and as such it is important to consider that these individual parts when put into a different context may not be evident of a problem at all. I have come to believe that the sum of these parts indicates a deep routed psychological problem which, if continually ignored will only cause more problems further down the line.
Lack of empathy, fear or observable emotion
Lack of empathy and fear
There is a great deal of evidence that suggests Amanda is not really connecting with her emotional surroundings and it often appears that even though she is well aware that something significant is happening, she doesn’t seem to know how to react to it. The FOA explanation for Amanda’s apparent lack of empathy is often to say she is frightened or intimidated by her surroundings, why then does she often appear in stark contrast to her former lover Raffaele who often looks quite literally terrified? If Amanda was afraid we would expect to see evidence of this in the courtroom, as such, Amanda often appears to be a combination of relaxed, bored, fidgety, excited or blank. The lack of emotion or fear in the courtroom proceedings is merely the tip of the iceberg when we consider the email sent to 23 of her friends and family two days after the murder as well as her inappropriately intimate behaviour with Raffaele immediately after the body was discovered and later at the police station where the two were seen kissing, cuddling, passing notes, laughing and making faces at each other. According to the testimony of one of Meredith Kercher’s English friends Natalie Hayward, Amanda did not cry and on occasion seemed angry, frustrated and even excited. When Natalie expressed the hope that Meredith did not suffer, Amanda replied: “They slit her throat Natalie, she would have died slowly and in a lot of pain.” This statement is crude, insensitive and certainly shows a lack of concern or empathy. Not only that, but when considering that the evidence so far suggests she may have killed Meredith Kercher this statement also implies that Amanda may have derived some kind of pleasure from the immediate (and assumingly horrified) reaction of Natalie Hayward. Similarly, testimony from Sophie Purton, another of Meredith’s English friends showed further evidence of Knox’s lack of empathy or consideration for the emotional significance of what was happening, when a visibly distraught Purton attempted to comfort or seek comfort from Knox with a hug “It was not reciprocated”, instead Amanda “seemed quite cold, and then when I asked what had happened she said, ‘What do you want to know, because I know everything.’ ” There is a significant body of evidence to suggest that Amanda displayed and is continuing to display no emotional response to the murder of her housemate and friend Meredith Kercher.
Facial expressions and body language
Humans are on the whole quite good at indentifying facial expressions and deriving appropriate responses from them. Amanda has been receiving a great deal of criticism for smiling and laughing in court. Despite this, if you actually look at the way Amanda is smiling, it is hard to derive any actual emotional expression in her smile or the rest of her face. Amanda’s smile is all mouth and no eyes, this not only makes her appear slightly manic in many of the photos but is actually quite disturbing, especially when we consider that she is currently on trial for murder. Amanda’s body language is often blank and her facial expressions seem empty and emotionless.
One of the preliminary judges Claudia Matteini said: “Your conduct after the murder is symptomatic of a personality which, considering your young age, provokes no small measure of dismay and apprehension, considering how extremely easy it was for you to control your states of mind.” Worrying indeed.
Sense of grandiose self worth/importance, attention seeking and interaction with others
In her prison diary
Despite the enormous body of evidence against her and the possibility of a very long sentence if convicted, Amanda Knox appears to be enjoying the attention of the world media and her new celebrity status, this is supported by her apparent glee at receiving fan mail in the form of letters from admirers: “I have received letters from fellow inmates and ADMIRERS TELLING ME THAT I AM HOT AND THEY WANT TO HAVE SEX WITH ME.” In a similar sentence she states that people “are acting like I’m the prettiest thing since Helen of Troy.” Though Amanda doesn’t directly compare herself to Helen of Troy, implying that people think this suggests a fairly grandiose ego or sense of self worth. The small sections of the diary that I have read seem as empty and as transparent an attempt to ‘remember’ as her ongoing ‘promise’ to tell the truth. I believe the diary is a show piece that will eventually be sold for cash and Amanda was probably very aware that her diary could be admitted as evidence, therefore it’s content is about as credible and truthful as her statements to the police. Amanda continues to show a lack of emotional response to the death of Meredith in her diary, instead choosing to scrawl the lyrics from the Beetles ‘Let it Be’ over and over which, incidentally, she spends singing loudly for hours a day much to the annoyance of her cellmates. Amanda also devotes a great deal of time commenting on her preoccupation with her looks, weight, tan and moaning about how unfair everything is and how much she wants to go home. The FOA claim this is evidence of how ‘strong’ and ‘optimistic’ Amanda is yet, without deliberately making outrageous presumptions it seems instead to read like the incessant ‘it’s not fair’ style ramblings of a spoiled little girl.
In her observed behaviour
Testimony from friends of Meredith and people that knew Amanda in Perugia indicate that people thought her behaviour was unusual; some even went as far as saying they didn’t like her. Amanda seems to be a very open person and prone to doing whatever she wants to do, whenever she feels like doing it. Testimony from housemate Filomena Romanelli indicates that Amanda was not used to observing the social rules of conversation or proper interaction: “Sometimes she had unusual attitudes, like she would start doing yoga while we were speaking, or she would play guitar while we were watching TV.” Similarly Amanda reportedly sang loudly in a restaurant shortly after meeting a group of people with whom she dined. Robyn Butterworth testified that Meredith felt awkward because “Amanda didn’t flush the toilet” she also testified that Meredith “told us about a bag Amanda had in the bathroom. It had condoms and a vibrator in it. Meredith thought it was strange it was there for all to see.” The testimony of people who lived with and knew Amanda in Perugia indicates some strange ideas about social interaction and living with others: pulling yoga poses in the middle of conversation, playing guitar when others are watching TV (reportedly the same chord over and over again), not flushing the toilet, singing loudly at inappropriate moments and leaving personal items in the bathroom, possibly in the hope of causing the reaction it did. Amanda’s attention seeking and lack of consideration for her housemates was probably seen as quite annoying, they may have distanced themselves from her because of this, thereby making her feel isolated and possibly prone to further attention seeking behaviour. Amanda is certainly aware of her looks and also how to use them and it seems she was rather possessive of the boys downstairs, sleeping with one and having had a crush on another. Testimony from Amy Frost indicates that a slight tension had formed between Amanda and Meredith when Meredith learnt that Giacomo Silenzi, one of the boys downstairs had a crush on her. Amanda reportedly stated “I like Giacomo too but you can have him.” This statement seems to convey arrogance, possessiveness and possibly the implication that Amanda though she was ‘doing Meredith a favour’ by ‘letting her go out with the boy I like’. This, understandably irritated Meredith who, in the interests of sharing some girly gossip with her housemate and friend maybe in the hope of getting some advice, was instead promptly told that she was ‘allowed’ to go out with him. Amanda really doesn’t seem to have many social skills, has a rather inflated ego, a sense of entitlement and self importance.
It is interesting to consider that Amanda was at risk of losing her job at Le Chic because she flirted with customers instead of working, she may have been well aware that her looks and nationality got her the job as her boss (later falsely implicated by Amanda for murder) stated: “She was the first American we met and we hired her because of that.” I certainly doubt that Amanda’s potential motive for the murder was the chance of her losing her job to Meredith at Le Chic, I do however, feel it is possible that Amanda may have falsely implicated Lumumba out of spite as he did eventually fire her.
Sexual promiscuity, impulsivity and risk taking behaviour
The fact that Amanda was sexually active and used drugs and alcohol does not on its own imply that Amanda is in any way different to the many students that go abroad to have a good time, explore and be free of restraint. But Amanda seems to have been particularly enthusiastic about sex, drugs and alcohol to the extent that indicates a level of impulsivity and unreasonable risk taking. Amanda has been portrayed as sexually vivacious, when in reality she was probably just a little promiscuous. Amanda’s ideas about sex and relationships may have been at odds with others and it has been suggested that Meredith disliked the strange men Amanda brought back to the house. Sex alone does not imply impulsiveness and provided it is safe and consensual there is nothing ‘weird’ about it, yet Amanda seemed to have deliberately displayed overtly sexualised behaviour possibly to show off or even to annoy others. Amanda reportedly had random sex with a man on a train whom she did not know as well as several others within a very short time after arriving in Perugia, Meredith and others may have commented on this behaviour and Amanda may have thought them prudish or boring. Amy Frost has testified that Meredith told her that one of the boys from downstairs, Daniel, liked Amanda. Despite the fact he had a sore from herpes on his mouth, Amanda found him exciting and interesting as in her eyes, having herpes made him good in bed. Amanda eventually had sex with him. This testimony suggests that Amanda made a conscious decision to have sex with an individual infected with herpes, knowing there was a risk of contracting this incurable sexually transmitted disease, risk-taking behaviour? You’d better believe it (anyone notice that sore on her mouth recently)
Likewise with the drugs. Amanda has so far only admitted to smoking (massive amounts of) hashish and her friends back home say she would not have tried anything harder. I find this hard to believe for two reasons: Firstly Amanda’s friends back home didn’t seem to know (or won’t admit) this impulsive risk taking side to her character, Amanda herself admits she was “intoxicated with freedom” when she arrived, implying that the Amanda they knew in Seattle was a very different Amanda to the one in Perugia. Secondly, drugs are easy to come by in Perugia and probably a little bit more acceptable than they would be in the US, Amanda is impulsive and drugs were there, I’d say it’s more likely than not.
Manipulative and deceitful behaviour
Amanda Knox has above all been rather manipulative and certainly deceitful. Amanda lied about virtually everything since the minute the body was found. Some examples: she claimed to have seen the body when it was discovered whilst at the same time claiming to have been ushered from the house before she could see it, she and Raffaele claimed to have phoned the Carabinieri but did not do so until after the postal police arrived, she told the postal police that Meredith always kept her door locked when the opposite was true, she claimed that Lumumba was at the cottage that night and had gone into the bedroom with Meredith upon which she heard a scream and covered her ears and later retracted this statement as false, the lies go on and on and on, they really are excruciating, exhausting and embarrassing . Amanda also frequently lied in the email she sent to her family and friends. Amanda is a terrible liar and has been caught doing it so many times. I really don’t think she can help herself. The staging of the burglary and possibly the rape, coupled with accusations and changing her story multiple times indicates that Amanda is highly intelligent, manipulative and devious. If the clean-up operation in the house can be proved it will be devastating for Knox and Sollecito, as the cleanup operation left multiple traces of Guede’s DNA yet barely a trace of the other defendants (odd to find only a couple of her fingerprints in the whole house don’t you think?). Committing a murder is one thing, cleaning it up is another but actually attempting to pin all the blame on Rudy Guede is extremely, desperately manipulative and if proved could result in a much stiffer sentence. Amanda’s actions and attempts to cover her tracks, speak louder than words and she has been described as “crafty and cunning” by Judge Massimo Riccarelli. Not a good start at all.
Ideas and conclusions
Each of these parts of Amanda’s observed behaviour and personality when considered individually do not provide the bigger picture of what sort of person we are looking at when we see Amanda. If we believe the FOA that Amanda is a kind, loving, sweet, wonderful person then surely Amanda’s behaviour in Perugia was decidedly different to her behaviour back home, this could indicate that she had been repressing these desires or hiding her behaviour from her family. Amanda’s family have hit back at the media, claiming that she has been portrayed as a devil and Meredith an angel, angel/devil really has nothing to do with it, what we must consider is Amanda’s personality and what insight it could provide into what happened that night, there is no reason to compare Amanda and Meredith. What I have written above is an amalgamation of different sources, reports, testimony etc (none of which contain Foxy Knoxy in the title), the reports I have read have been crossed referenced with others and I believe it is all there and accurate. I could have written more but there really is so much out there to suggest Amanda Knox is certainly not your typical American girl abroad.
Amanda Knox seems to have some deep-rooted psychological problems including an inability to relate emotionally to others or to process emotion; if she is found guilty we will be able to add to this her complete lack of remorse. Amanda is sexually promiscuous, impulsive, restless, tactless and has a rather inflated opinion of herself and her own level of entitlement. She has shown no care or concern for Meredith Kercher or her family, even wearing to court a t-shirt emblazoned with the words ‘all you need is love’ (somebody sack whoever thought that was a good idea). She has put her family through a horrendous ordeal and even now does not realise the gravity of the situation. She has been described as “completely detached from reality” and I doubt that’s too far from the truth.
I wonder why people are still surprised that she has lied, continues to lie and will continue to lie regardless of what eventually happens in this case.
I dunno…all these things are so confusing, it’s hard to make heads or tails of it. I had a really kooky weird hippie friend when I did my study abroad, actually. She said and did a lot of bizarre things and had delayed reactions to things, and just didn’t respond the way that normal people did. I know she did a lot of drugs, and she might have had a learning disability or something, looking back. She was adorable, and weird, and I loved hanging out with her. She, obviously, wasn’t a murderer, and I can look at her crazy exploits and the trouble we got into together fondly. However, I wonder if I heard something like this about her, if I would be relaying some of her crazy reactions and goings on as “clues” or “insights” into her crime.
Just a passing comment from a first-time reader of this blog, with thanks for the very interesting post and discussion thread. Amanda Knox’s email from Nov. 2 *is* chilling to read. I agree that her lack of fear and empathy, both, stand out. An emptiness of feeling. It is really tragic in someone so young.
I adore weirdos, am one myself, but we’re talking about an apparent lack of empathy, not just a hippyish habit of doing yoga in odd places.
One of the most narcissistic people I’ve ever cared about used to go to his favorite Goth nightclub and hand out little cards that said, “I hate you.” Understand, this was his way of being absolutely sincere, of making genuine contact on his own terms. It was much better, I think, to hand out his cards–which his friends understood and tolerated, or at least weren’t hurt by–than to have to act out in a more destructive and literal way the pain and rage and loneliness narcissistic people feel, which they often cause their close associates to feel as well.
It’s not hard to imagine the envy and feelings of shame and inadequacy that might have played a role in this tragic murder.
The writer is a sell out, and at the end justice will prevail, (you described young adolescent who’s undergoing adolescence)
Anybody knows which are the date trial, or when is the next trial date???.
Nothing said in this well written article makes Amanda Knox a murder. It describes a young adolescent undergoing adolescence, and there’s no crime for that. The writer here in simple words is a Sell Out!!!. Thinks it knows all the facts, the truth base on news in which people say he said…he did…theory…etc!. not the real truth as it is a mystery. That’s the pure truths, real reality. Hope Amanda gets back her freedom, it sadden to see she has lost time of her life being in Prison, which is now one year 5 months. I Wish President Barack Obama would help, i know U.S. Goverment don’t get involved in this type of cases, lets the Italian judicial system solve the case, when everybody knows if this trial was in America, this murder trial case would have been already dismissed, Too bad the Italian judicial system is so different than the U.S.
Below you can see what Amanda Knox wrote to her ex-boyfriend from jail a few days after she was arrested in November 6, 2007, it doesn’t sound guilty to me.
“Dear DJ, I really feel the need to hold you in my arms right now. I have this knot inside and I feel as if someone really cold and strong is pressing my head.
‘I beg you, I cannot stay alone right now. I hate being weak, but I am ill and tired. I want to go home.
‘How can I continue like this for the next 14 days? How can they treat me like this, looking at me as if I was an assassin?
They really believe that I am and that’s not ok. This cannot be my life. I beg you, this cannot be my life. Please hold me in your arms, now.”
Kingston, I think that letter was written a few days after she was arrested in November 7 , 2007 for a crime she did not do, she has been in jail for one year and 5 months without being charge of the murder of Meridth Kercher. I want Amanda Knox to be “Exonerated” from everything because she didn’t do anything wrong. After seeing all the news on her murder trial case since November 1, 2007, when Meridth Kercher was murder i’m baffled for what happened to her. Amanda is a victim of Judicial mistake. On April 2, 2008 Rudy Hermann Guede already convicted for the murder of Meridth Kercher said he had not seen Amanda Knox and her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito at the apartment that night of the murder. Off course later Guede changed his story. Amanda Knox has been criticized of carefree behavior after Meridth Kercher death, her behavior could be a psychological reaction to the pain of being involved in murder case. sign of malaise and confusion. being accused of murdering her roommate Meridth Kercher is inconceivable that Amanda Knox would do something like this.
Hi Guys and welcome,
Kumero, I believe there will be another trial date this Friday keep an eye on TJMK as Pete will post a trial schedule within the next few days. We should hopefully start seeing some of the DNA evidence soon.
Ashley, I’m a little confused and not sure in what way I am a ‘sell out’. I certainly never claimed to be in possession of all the facts, after all the trial is barely getting started. I’m sorry that this post gave you that impression. Yet I beg to differ, the odd behaviour of Amanda Knox following the discovery of the body stood out to Meredith’s friends, the postal police, the carabinieri and many others I find it hard to understand why attempting to understand AK’s behaviour within a psychological framework makes me a ‘sell out’ but of course you are entitled to your opinion.
President Obama will not get involved, the Justice Dept will not get involved, neither will the CIA, FBI or any other US government official, simply because they have a strict policy of ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ towards Americans that get into trouble abroad.
I wish people would stop bleating about getting the President involved, he’s the P R E S I D E N T don’t you think he has better things to worry about than an American woman accused of murder in Italy? Forgive me if I’m speaking out of turn but this seems typical of an FOA supporter, the unparalleled arrogance and incredible delusion that the case against Amanda Knox is important enough to be put before the President of the United States. Who do you think she is, Aung San Suu Kyi for goodness sake?
The evidence has suggested Amanda Knox was involved in the murder of Meredith Kercher not to mention she has lied with an incredible ferocity. Amanda Knox’s current position is entirely of her own doing. Forgive me for not bringing out the violins just yet. One thing I’ve become tired of hearing is the endless bleating about a miscarriage of justice. Amanda has not yet been convicted and therefore cannot have suffered a miscarriage of justice.
Kingston, that letter does not prove her innocence in the same way it does not prove her guilt. Letters like that will serve to make her appear more human. However, this is not a get out of jail free card, it will not absolve her of all charges and it essentially proves nothing.
Marta, I’d love you see your sources especially those which make you so entirely convinced that Amanda Knox is on trial for a crime she did not commit. Please help me understand how Amanda Knox’s blood came to be mixed with Meredith’s blood in several places in the house, her DNA on the handle of the knife and the victims on the tip, her apparent knowledge of the crime scene and cause of death despite witnesses swearing under oath that she never went into or saw into the room, please explain why if she is such an innocent lamb that she has lied and lied and lied, why not just tell the truth? You don’t need to concoct different versions of events, you either have a true alibi that fits with the facts of the case and exonerates you or you don’t. AK and RS still have no alibi, they don’t even agree with each other for goodness sake! I could go on and on and on. May I suggest TJMK and PMF? You will find interesting discussion on all these issues. Please be wary of using Perugia Shock and Candace Dempsey as a source.
I know it may be hard to even contemplate that AK may have been involved in this but in the interests of justice and a balanced view it is certainly fair to at least consider it. I have at times considered that she may have been dragged into something she had nothing to do with but then I saw the video footage of them kissing and hugging in the lingerie store, read some more, devoured as much info as I could and gradually Amanda Knox started to look like the opposite of the innocent little lamb she has always been portrayed as.
Always remember that Meredith suffered an extremely violent and brutal death and the pathologist has testified that more than one person was involved. If the evidence exonerates Amanda Knox so be it, yet we should not cast aside the death of a beautiful young woman so heartlessly by ignoring all evidence suggesting AK was involved in some way, if she has an alibi I’d love to hear it, if her defence team can explain the evidence I’m sure the jury will listen but please don’t assume that just because this isn’t America that the trial and the Italian judiciary is in some way backward. It’s certainly an attitude that has miffed the Italian people.
Psychology theory cannot be twisted to fit your idea of what is right. I have studied the subject and have access to many journals and articles. AK has a case to answer to, her behaviour has been completely inappropriate. Please understand that the judge who called her ‘crafty and cunning’ had access to a lot more information that you or I.
Should further evidence come to light which implies one or both defendants had nothing to do with this it will be noted and considered, as yet things do not look good for Amanda Knox.
I’m very… but very sorry this happened to American Amanda Knox, it sadden me to see her in prison and feel very sorry that she has lost so much time of her life being in prison since November 7, 2007 till this date that i’m writing you April 19, 2009. I’m with her, i support her 100%, i know she’s 100% innocent, i know she didn’t do it, i’m 100% convinced of that, i believe in her. Hoping she gets her freedom back very soon and comes back to her home were she belong of Seattle, Washington, United States of America.
President of the United States Barack Obama, why not?
If I was the President I would send the special forces in to break her out of prison.
or stop the EARTHQUAKE aid if the Italian don’t release her from prison.
Miss Represented, are you a Brit???
Did you see 48 hour mystery on Meridith Kercher murder?
according to you it looks like Amanda is guilty, why she didn’t go back to America
when her parents told her to come back, instead she choose
to voluntarily help the police with the case?.
Since you know a lot about the case just for curiosity has
the room where Meridith was killed rented since she die???
I will find it difficult to sleep in that room after all that blood bath.
Hi Pietro,
Yes I am and I did see the 48 Hours Mystery on Meredith Kercher. My initial thought was ‘is this a joke?’ then ‘they can’t actually be serious’, closely followed by a sinking and horrified feeling of resentment and anger. The show was hideously, enormously (and if the subject matter weren’t so serious) almost hilariously biased towards the defendant Amanda Knox. Peter Van Sant didn’t even make an effort to openly discuss the facts of the case instead he presented us with a fanciful tale of an insane satanic orgy obsessed prosecutor, a conspiracy theorist blogger, Douglas Preston who I probably don’t need to say isn’t exactly what I’d call impartial and the usual FOA garbage. It was actually almost painful to watch and I hope Meredith’s family never see it.
I won’t deny and never have denied that I believe Amanda Knox was involved in the murder of Meredith Kercher, I am still open to interpreting in what capacity she was involved for example we still have no motive. I for one would love to know what happened to their bloodstained clothes and exactly how AK, RS and RG came to be at the cottage together that night. If Amanda Knox gets off it will probably be on a technicality or on appeal I must admit the media eyes on her can’t exactly make things easy this will surely go in her favour at appeal.
Pietro wrote: “why she didn’t go back to America when her parents told her to come back, instead she choose to voluntarily help the police with the case?”
The FOA would like you to believe that Amanda chose to stay in Perugia to help the police with their investigation and this goes to show what a nice and helpful person she really is, the reality (as it often is with FOA ‘facts’) is very different. The truth is, Amanda did not choose to stay in Perugia she hadn’t been cleared by the police so that she could go home. Amanda could not leave Italy following the discovery of the body because she was still deemed ‘a person aware of the facts’. Meredith’s friends were all questioned by the police and their alibi’s were verified only then were they cleared to go home. Amanda never really had an alibi, not one that agreed with Raffaele’s anyway, the two incriminated themselves from the very beginning. Odd and inappropriate behaviour, huge gaping holes in their alibi and not to mention lies, lies and more lies. Not entirely surprising that Amanda wasn’t cleared to leave Italy. A few days after she wrote the rambling email to friends and family she was arrested.
Another trick the FOA likes to use when people start prodding a bit too deeply into the reason Amanda stayed in Perugia is to say that guilty people run (like Guede) and innocent people don’t. This could not be further from the truth. Some people who have committed a crime will run away because they are scared of getting caught and some people will stay and monitor the police investigation and even insert themselves into it in order that they look less suspicious. I think Amanda knew that it would be highly suspicious if she ran away so she stayed and likely took part in the clean up. I’m fairly sure that AK and RS wanted Filomena to find the body but one bizarre coincidence led to another and the postal police all but caught them in the act of staging the crime scene.
Peitro wrote: “has the room where Meridith was killed rented since she die??? I will find it difficult to sleep in that room after all that blood bath.”
No the room has not been rented; the cottage was completely sealed after the discovery of the body and remains sealed to this day. There have been a number of break-ins at 7 Via Della Pergola which must have terribly upset the Kercher family but apart from these people, police officers, CSI guys and a handful of others no one has been back in the house since Meredith’s body was found. As far as I know the owner of the house is seeking some kind of financial compensation for loss of rent from the time the house was sealed to the present date. The house may be demolished after the investigation but the owner may chose to sell it or re-let. I agree he’ll have a hard time re-letting that room and the whole house in fact. If Amanda is convicted she’ll automatically be granted an appeal, a further inspection of the house may be needed so the owner could be waiting a lot longer to sell, let or even demolish his own house.
I’d estimate the personal financial cost to the owner of the house:
17 months rent @ 300euro x 4 rooms = 20,400 euro x 2 (as the owner of the house had a second apartment downstairs which has also been sealed) = 40,800 euro of rent payments lost by the owner of the house. Not to mention adding lawyers into the equation as he is seeking damages.
Where do you think he got the extra money from? Poor guy.
Just another fallout from the whole sorry saga and the sad truth is Amanda Knox and her family couldn’t give a flying fig.
I haven’t got the vaguest idea whether American Amanda Knox is guilty or not (and don’t particularly care, to be honest). It’s a shame that the case is being tried in Italy, where the concept of truth and justice don’t exist as we understand them.
i feel terrible… i have only become aware of this story recently and have been researching it carefully…. i was curious if there is any stories regarding the victims family?? what was the victim like??? are her parents advocating for her???? seems like a lot of stuff about this amanda character but nothing about meredeth!!the human race is capable of almost anything, all we have to do is read the news reports its all there…..however most crimes are committed for a reason not matter how trivial……..someone knows what happend……..even if it isn’t amanda knox!!!! for now i will keep my mind open and i’m going to keep researching……..this is a very interesting and horrific story!
Amanda Knox’s DNA on the handle of Sollecito’s knife+Meredith Kercher’s DNA on the tip of the blade+the knife is compatible with the mortal wound_______________________________________________= life in prison for Amanda Knox
Gun Control?? Computer glitch; comments got posted to the wrong story? I think that the interrogators and prosecution have lost sight of getting at the truth and instead are manipulating all evidence to “fit ” their scenario. An example, (and this answers the big question of WHY did Amanda change her story so many times), she was badgered by interrogators, for several hours, into saying Patrick Lumumba was present because “they” (the interrogators) had it “all figured out” based on the text message between the two that said “see you later”. This is what happens when someone is hell-bent on trying to make their theory into fact/truth by manipulating and forcing evidence to fit, instead of focusing on getting at the truth. I also have my suspicions regarding the post crime break-ins to the cottage with the mattress being stolen, and candles/knives laid out around the house in “satanic ritual fashion” – could this have been staged by Prosecutor Magnini to fit his insistence on the crime being part of some satanic ritual? Could the mattress have been removed to create the illusion that such a small room could have housed 4 people involved in a wild sex game, as opposed to showing the true small size of the room and that the prosecution’s scenario is improbable… I just want to raise these questions because I am not convinced that everything adds up to equal the prosecution’s theory. Also, if anyone actually watched the CBS show with live footage of Amanda in court through the trial, as well as the prosecutor, and wants to practice reading body language, you will see a very different Amanda than what the freeze-frame photos of her smiling and smirking that the media chooses to post portray…And the prosecutor looks consistently smug and rather arrogant in the footage, not like someone interested in getting at the truth, but more like someone interested in “being right”.
See is always smiling at her family in the first row of the courtroom. Considering what she’s going through she’s probably very happy to see the face of someone she loves. Is that really inappropriate? If she was crying all the time, you people would think she’s crazy too so the girl can’t win no matter what she does!
In a diary that Knox started in prison on November 8, 2007, shortly after her arrest, there is a rare passage about Kercher in which she imagines her raped and killed. She wrote: “I can only imagine what she felt in those moments frightened, injured, raped. But I imagine more what she went through when the blood went out of her. What did she feel? And the mother? Desperation? Did she have the time to find peace or in the end did she have only terror?”
Miss Represented, Thank You Very Much for the information.
Hi Steve, I’m not sure why but I found your comments about the Italian justice system a little out of hand. The concepts of truth and justice do exist in Italy and have been around for a lot longer than the ones in the US. I do not understand the plain arrogance that assumes that only an American can prosecute an American it’s simply not true. I suppose it is also true that people are often most frightened of what they do not entirely understand. It’s not a shame that the case is being tried in Italy, the crime happened in Italy! Are you advocating that we can simply hold a trial where ever we like depending on whether is it convenient, to be honest, what really is a shame is that your first comment here had to be so presumptuous and loaded, I’m also a bit curious as to why you are even reading and commenting on a blog to do with the case if you’re not interested in the case or the outcome.
Dear Rocco, Casey, Anticaria, Felix, Clement etc please choose a handle and stick to it! I’m not sure if you are aware but I can see your IP address! It may be nice to have a conversation with yourself at home but don’t do it here please, if you select a handle and stick to it I’m happy to continue the discussion but I don’t want to have to debate with all fifteen of your alter-ego’s!
LESSONS WE HAVE LEARNED:
1) Become acquainted with the theories of ‘when’ and ‘when not’ to cry.
Do not sit in the front row in class.

5) Never, never touch a bra clasp.
6) Perform yoga and cartwheels at your own risk.
7) Refrain from playing the guitar.
9) Never include the phrase ‘see you later’ in a text message.
10) Do not own or wear a red coat.
11) Use ‘white out’ to remove all traces of Perugia when traveling in Italy. On second thought, remove all traces of Italy when traveling in Europe.
12) Males: Do not date attractive, intelligent, delightfully free spirited American females.
13) Females: Choose roommates who are not very intelligent and not very attractive.
The court in Perugia has ruled that the house should no longer be held under seizure by police.
Renting out the cottage to students who flock to Perugia’s University for Foreigners could prove a challenge – the murder has attracted huge publicity in Italy and the house is said to contain blood stains. The Italian landlady who owns the property said she will change the locks on doors and install bars across the windows to prevent future break-ins. She has lodged a civil suit for loss of rental income over the last 18 months.
